THE PROCESS OF BEATIFICATION
Today Gilberto Grossi is a surgeon at the hospital of Pisa.
Gilberto’s ordeal began at the age of ten, when he was diagnosed
with a form of ulcerative colitis. It is a disease that usually occurs
in adulthood. For a child there did not seem to be any effective
treatment. The situation became more complicated, at fifteen he had
to undergo an operation to remove his colon, but the benefit was
short-lived because soon after [...] rare complications of the original
disease appeared. Little by little Gilberto could no longer walk.
The doctors did not know how to intervene. Yet Gilberto seemed to
be sustained by an iron will. In spite of all his health problems, he
managed to graduate from high school and enrolled in medical school.
In 1994, however, his condition worsened, and this time the pain was
accompanied by discouragement and depression. It was during these
months that Father Paolino Beltrame Quattrocchi, whom he had met
years before, suggested that he should spend some time in his house
in Rome, with the proposal of helping him to enter his parents’ letters
into the computer. Gilberto, who by now had given up hope of being
able to devote himself to medical studies, gladly accepted. [...]
