While he transcribes letter after letter, he confides in the
intercession of Maria and Luigi. Not only does he ask to be healed,
but also to realize his two dreams, which at the moment seemed
so far away: to graduate in medicine and to marry the girl who in
the meantime he had become engaged to. After a few months,
one morning in June 1995, he suddenly discovered that his sores
had closed and the unbearable bone pain had disappeared. The
following examinations testify that the disease had not disappeared
but, inexplicably, the symptoms no longer existed. For Gilberto
there were no doubts: his silent invocations were had been heard. A
conviction that is strengthened the following year, when he manages
to get a degree and get married. Immediately afterwards, he began
specializing in neurosurgery, covering grueling on-call shifts and

performing demanding operations. In 1999, his colleagues, who THE PROCESS OF BEATIFICATION
examined him to verify his fitness for his duties, could not believe
their eyes: the disease appeared in all its severity, but he no longer
felt any pain.
