BIOGRAPHY
TOMÁS ALVIRA ALVIRA
(1906-1992)
Tomás was born in Villanueva de Gállego (Spain) on January
17, 1906.
education
He attended the University of Zaragoza, where he graduated in
Chemistry in 1922. His professional life would always be linked to
teaching, a passion to which he dedicated his entire life. He taught
and directed several school centers. At the end of the Spanish Civil
War he began teaching at the Ramiro Institute of Maeztu in Madrid,
where he obtained the Chair in 1941. The “Ramiro” is known in
Madrid as a center of excellence, and it was here that Tomás joined
a prestigious college of teachers.
His intuition
His insight regarding the “Living classroom” was
groundbreaking, whereby «the teacher seeks to awaken in the
BIOGRAPHY itself. We cannot exhort students to study for reward or punishment,
student the desire and love of knowledge, seeing it as a good in
we must make them desire knowledge!» . (Tomás Alvira)

This insight of his would also form the basis of his children’s
education, which would aim at setting them free to make informed
choices.
