tHe joy

There was always great joy in the Alvira family, even in
moments of difficulty and pain, as one of their daughters, María Isabel,
affirms: «My mother used to say every now and then: how much this
illness is helping me. God is incredible. And she would not only say
thank you, but also show the positive side that she could see in all
her things. Because of the disease, invalid as she was, she couldn’t
do anything by herself, she was hemiplegic. Despite everything, she
made us laugh a lot. She had an incredible sense of humor, she called
her wheelchair “my BMW”. [...] One day my father, who by then was
at the end of his life, said to me, “I don’t know if there are people
in the world as happy as we are, but it seems impossible”» . (María
