«My parents were convinced that the decisive factor in
education was the atmosphere in which it takes place, and that
the best pedagogy was indirect. The good example they set for us
influenced us greatly. This is how they transmitted faith to us. For
example, they would go to Mass and we would see them take part
in it with a devotion that made an impression on us. They showed
us what God’s love means by winning us over with affection; they
sacrificed themselves without saying anything to help us. And their

«I think this is the most important thing, the key to what we
all were able to take in: their example. I learned a great deal by
seeing how they dealt with their illnesses, during which both of them
suffered greatly. My father, for example, after one night when he had
been in the hospital and had suffered terribly, when we went to pick
