«Louis and Zélie Martin, parents of St. Therese, wanted to
live closer to the Word of God, in all its sweetness and its demands.
The result of this was that their personal and conjugal lives were
transformed from within through the daily practice of the Sacraments,
in a constant relationship with God. […]
Louis and Zélie soon understood that suffering was part of
the daily Christian life. In union with the Passion of Christ, they
bore the immense sadness of the loss of four young children... without
forgetting the family drama of Zélie’s tumor and her death when the
last child, Teresa, was just five years old. At the end of his earthly
existence, Louis would experience a psychiatric hospital with all that
