As was the custom at the time, it was the respective families
who agreed and proposed the engagement to their children. Lelia,
who had already refused other candidates, was not sure and did not
want to deceive Ulisse. He insisted, and he returned to her house. This
time she accepted to meet him, she was fascinated and they soon got
engaged. During their engagement, both were sincere, they clearly
confided their thoughts in each other and shared the same desire to
grow in faith and to bind their union in the Lord. They were married
on September 29, 1930, in the parish of St. Teresa of Avila in Rome.

a diFFicult coexistence

Lelia «knew that it would not have been easy for her to lead a
family in which her in-laws, her own mother, as well as her intrusive
sister-in-law Maria with her husband and son, initially all lived
together» . There was much stability to maintain, but «with tact and

without provoking breakups, Lelia and her husband found a way to
explain themselves and to claim their autonomy» .
