tHe War
During the Second World War, Ulisse, opposed to the Fascist
regime, did not agree to move to Verona, so as not to compromise
himself with the government of Mussolini. He therefore found
himself suspended from work and unpaid. The danger of being
arrested forced him to leave his family and take refuge at the Roman
Major Seminary.
Lelia was left alone to manage the house and the children,
without the salary of her husband, the family’s only livelihood. She
lived in fear of retaliation from the Germans and even lacked the
necessities to survive. She strengthened her faith in Providence and
tried to find solutions to put together some money and save. She sold
her silverware, her crystal glassware, a few gold items, and used the
curtains to make clothes for her children. She sent many letters to
reassure Ulisse and, together with him, rely on God.
In December 1944, the arrival of the Americans finally allowed
the family to reunite and Ulisse resumed his work at the Ministry. ENGAGEMENT, MATRIMONY AND CHILDREN
