At that point, he started his life over again, but Sergio was
unable, on his own, to manage the mill and even to pay the debts
accumulated due to illnesses and seven funerals. So he decided to join
the many villagers who in that period were leaving for America. He
left in September 1912, the same year of Igina’s death. He found work
in a mine in Chicago.
i Feared For my FaitH
After a short time, he had an accident which forced him to spend
three months in the hospital. The ordeals seemed never-ending, and
there were many reasons for him to despair, but he did not do so. He
spent this period entrusting himself to God in prayer and, in 1913 he
decided to return to Italy: «America was not for me. I was afraid for
my faith» . He returned to his work at the mill and, in prayer, entrusted

to God his desire to be able to start a family again.

His prayers were answered: Sergio met Domenica and 10
children were born from his second marriage. Assisted by his wife,
Sergio died in Verica (Modena) on October 12, 1966.
